Fine line loop tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand with a small, thin, single-line tattoo on the inner wrist, shaped as an open loop with a curled tail. The linework is even and delicate, drawn in dark ink with no shading. The hand is lit from the front against a plain dark grey backdrop, with a pink gemstone ring on one finger.

Margaret had not expected the reunion to be held in the same assembly hall, with the same smell of floor polish and boiled cabbage drifting through the kitchen hatch. Miss Pryce had made them practise the same loop for an entire term. Down, round, a long sweep back up and a small curl to the right, over and over in pencil until the margins furred grey. "A letter is a line that knows where it is going," she would say, tapping the board with her ruler. Margaret had hated it. Her own loops came out tight and lopsided, like knots tied in a hurry, and Pryce would sigh and take the pencil from her hand to show her again.

Ruth Ashby found her by the squash table, a name badge already stuck crooked to her cardigan. She was the one who had copied Margaret's homework and then, years later, had written the only letter Margaret ever kept. "Still can't do a proper loop?" Ruth asked, nodding at the sign-in sheet on the trestle. "Go on, then."

Margaret took the biro and wrote her name, slowly, the way she had been taught. The M rose, dipped, and swept back up with a small curl at the end. It did not look tied in a hurry. For once it looked like it knew exactly where it was going.
