Black fine line tattoo on the inside of a wrist showing a heart outline with a fingerprint heart and the word love in script.

Fingerprint heart with love script on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo on the inner wrist shows an outlined heart drawn with a thin, sweeping line, with the word love written in script along its left edge. A fingerprint pattern fills the heart's lower left lobe, and the word ve sits inside the right side of the heart. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the design is centred on a pale background of skin and a light blue textured cloth.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marta, the ward was quiet tonight, the sort of quiet that makes you listen to the drip stands ticking as they settle. I want to tell you about the man in bed nine who asked me for a pen. He wasn't dying, not that night, but he had the look of someone who has decided to say things before the morning shift arrives. He had a biro from the trolley and a paper cup of cold tea, and he drew a heart on the back of a menu from the Chinese on Harrow Road, the kind with the thin sweep to it, like a skipping rope turned into a shape. Then he pressed his thumb onto the ink pad from the observation chart kit and pushed it into the lower lobe of the heart so the whorls came out grey and blurred. He called it his thumbprint, and said his daughter was the only one who had ever been able to read it.

He wanted the word love written along the left edge, so I did it for him in my best looping hand, and he said my v looked like a bird landing. When I asked him where the ve should go, he pointed to the inside of the heart, right where the curve bends back on itself. I wrote it small so it wouldn't crowd his fingerprint. We laughed about how the drawing was going to be the most looked-at thing on the ward for the rest of the week.

He showed it to his daughter when she came in at six, and she held his wrist very gently, the way you hold something you're afraid will smudge. I think that was the moment I understood what he'd been doing all night. He'd made a mark that was really his and gave it to her to keep.

I still have the menu in my locker. Tell Mum I'm fine, and that I'll ring on Sunday, when I've slept.
