Heart and ribbon outline on an inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a palm facing upwards, with a small black outline tattoo on the inner wrist. The tattoo combines a heart outline with a ribbon that loops across it, drawn in thin, even linework with no shading. The plain light bedding behind the hand keeps the focus on the tattoo, and a gold ring is worn on the middle finger.

The ribbon came off a spool in a Bristol haberdasher's, and you bought it with the last of your shore money because the pale grey made you think of the sea in February. Three days out, the Cormorant was pitching south through the Bay of Biscay with a hold full of Welsh slate, and you were the only one aboard who could keep the chart table lamp lit. The bosun called you Mouse. The cook called you nothing at all, which you took as a kindness.

On the long watches you drew in the margins of the logbook. A heart first, plain and a little lopsided, then a ribbon folded across it the way Ada used to fold the tissue paper round the cakes in the shop window. Nobody read the margins. When the mate tore out a page to light the stove, you let him, because the heart was only pencil and you could draw another the next night, and the next, all the way down to the Horn.
Off the Falklands the wind went round and stayed there for nine days, and the ribbon began to fray at the ends. You tied it tighter each morning. On the tenth, the cook spilled flour across the chart table, and when you wiped it clean you found the heart drawn fresh in ink across the back of an Admiralty sheet, the ribbon finished in one clean stroke you did not remember making. You tied the spare end of the grey thread to the rail and went up to watch the sun come out over water the colour of old pewter.
