Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows several tall conifers rising through dense green foliage, with a pale trunk in the lower left. A soft, misty mountain peak fills the background in blues and greys. The shading is smooth and detailed, with layered greens and highlights creating depth across the composition.

The mist came down off Corrow Peak the morning the Lord Warden's carts went missing, and by noon I could not see the pass road from the sawmill steps. My father always said a forester who cannot find his trees is no forester at all, so I took the old marking axe from its hook and went up the slope by feel.

There are nine tall firs on the ridge above Harl, and every child in the valley learns their names before their letters. Mother called them the Sisters. The pale trunk on the lowest slope, the one the lightning split, we called the Widow, because she stood apart and never shed her bark. I found the carts beneath her roots, wheels sunk in the soft needle-litter, the drivers asleep under their coats with the mist breathing over them.
Getting them out took three days and a rope from the mill. On the second night I sat with my back against the Widow and counted the Sisters by their dark shapes in the murk, one, two, up to nine, and then a tenth shape that should not have been there, a small green fir I had never marked. I knew then that the forest had grown while nobody was looking, and that someone would have to take the axe to it or learn to live in its shadow.
I did neither. I tied a strip of red cloth to the tenth and went down to fetch my father, who laughed until he coughed, then went quiet and handed me the tally book. Write it in, he said. The forest keeps its own accounts. We only get to read them.
