Mountain and pine forest in a circle
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a misty mountain range behind a stand of tall pine trees, with a slope of undergrowth and rocks in the foreground. It is contained within a circular frame. The shading is built from fine stippled dots and soft gradients, with the darkest tones in the trees and the lightest in the distant peaks. The composition is shot straight on against a dark background.

The brass sight on the ridge hut only ever showed a circle of the world, a bright coin of valley with its edges gone soft as breath on glass. Tomas had grumbled about it for thirty summers. Every morning he bent to the eyepiece, counted the pines standing along the ridge like sentries, and reported the number to the district office by telephone: eleven, twelve, one gone down in the wind.

The autumn his knees gave out, the job passed to his niece Ilse, who was seventeen and cared more for the radio than for trees. She learned the count from the logbook in his cramped hand. Nine on the Tuesday. Nine on the Wednesday. On the Thursday the mountains behind the trees vanished under a grey pour of cloud, and the lens showed only the nearest slope, dark trunks rising out of white nothing.
She rang the office and said there was nothing to count. The man on the line told her to log whatever she could see, so she did: the trunks, the scree, the rough path where the goats came down. Then she wiped the lens with her sleeve and looked again, and the peaks had come back, pale as the underside of a fish, exactly where Tomas always said they would be.
On the back page of the logbook she wrote the count as nine, then crossed it out and drew a circle, because that was all the brass had ever given anyone, and it had been enough to be going on with.
