Seated horned creature on a thigh
Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A hunched, horned creature with a snout, pointed ears and clawed hands sits with its head bowed. The linework is fine and sketch-like, with soft grey shading across the fur and a cast shadow beneath the figure. Only black and grey ink is used, and the design fills the outer thigh against plain skin.

The beast came up out of the peat ditch the week after the first hard frost, and it did not come to threaten anyone. Ada Mullen found it sitting in the lee of the byre wall with its great horned head bowed over its knuckles, as if it had been sent for and then forgotten. Her father wanted the shotgun. Her mother wanted the priest. Ada took a heel of bread from her apron pocket and set it on the frozen step.

The creature ate nothing that night, nor the next. It only sat. Snow filled the hollows around its feet and never quite covered its shadow, which lay out beside it on the white like a second, longer animal. The men said it was waiting for a debt to be paid. Ada, who had counted every egg and every ewe since she could hold a tally stick, thought it was waiting for someone to ask its name.
On the ninth morning she went out with a lantern and sat down on the cold stone beside it. She told it about the thaw her father kept promising, about the lamb that would not stand, about the brother who had gone to the mill town and sent no letters. The beast lifted its snout and breathed on her hair, warm as a stable. When she had finished she said, 'Well, you'll have to tell me yours,' and the creature turned its head slowly towards the fields.
Come spring the lane was muddy and the creature was gone. On the flagstone where it had sat there remained a long scrape of claw marks and, at the edge of them, a smooth grey pebble the size of a fist with a horned ridge worn into one side. Ada kept it on the windowsill until the family moved away, and nobody on the farm ever again asked her where the beast had gone.
