Two bears, antlers and flowers on a limb

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

The design shows a brown bear reaching upward with its arms raised, holding a smaller golden bear in front of it. Red and orange flowers with green leaves form an arch across the top, and a pair of antlers curves up from the bottom on either side. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in brown, yellow, red and green give it a classic colour look, set against the skin in a close crop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lift at Coldharbour House had been broken since the spring, so the brown bear carried the little golden one up himself, fourteen flights of concrete stairs, stopping at each landing so the cub could look out of the narrow windows. Nobody on the estate thought this strange. Bears had always lived in the high flats, said old Mrs Okafor on the fourth floor, because they were the only ones patient enough for the stairs.

On the ninth floor the cub asked why they could not stay low, where the ground was soft and the bins were full of good things. The bear set him down on the landing and pointed through the glass at the car park, where the council had planted rowan trees in orange tubs. Flowers grew up here if you were willing to wait for them, he said, and the cub, who was four and not easily impressed, pressed his nose to the window and counted every blossom he could find.

At the top, the door of flat fourteen had a pair of antlers screwed above it, grey with years, left there by a tenant who had believed they brought luck. The bear reached up with both arms, as he did every evening, and the cub climbed onto his shoulders to ring a bell that nobody had ever answered. Tonight the door opened before he could touch it. Inside, a woman with a kettle said they were late, and the bear said the stairs had been long, and the cub said the stairs had been fine.

The bear hung his coat on the antlers. The cub, who had been carried every step of the way, slid down, walked the last few paces on his own feet, and shut the door behind them.
