Expecto Patronum script on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
Two lines of cursive black script read Expecto Patronum, running diagonally across the outer upper arm. The linework is thin and even, with the ink appearing dark navy or black against pale skin. The arm fills the right side of the frame, with a cream dress and a plain wall in the background.

Ada had been teaching the looped letters to the Pendeen children for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had managed the long descender without first crying into the blotter. Tom Varcoe was the exception only in the sense that he cried before he started. He sat at the back by the coal scuttle, tongue between his teeth, dragging his nib across the paper as though the words had insulted him.

"It's a spell, Miss," he said, when she leaned over his shoulder. "You have to mean it or it won't go."
She told him that meaning it was no help with a downstroke. Then she took his pen and wrote the phrase for him in the slanting hand her own mother had taught her, two lines sloping down the page like a boat's wake. Thin and even, as if the ink were concentrating on every curve.
Tom copied it fourteen times that week. By Friday the letters stood up straight, and his sheet was the only one on the board that didn't look as though it had been written in a gale.
The turn came in February, when the fleet limped home short a boat. The Morwenna's crew were brought in on the tide, and Tom's father was not among them. Ada found the boy on the harbour wall at dusk with his practice sheet folded into a little boat. He launched it into the swell. The paper rode the water, the ink running only slightly, and the words stayed readable until the last light went off the cliff.
