Eye and stars tattoo on the palm
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo across the palm shows an eye with a stippled, radiating sunburst border at the base of the hand. Above it, small asterisk-like stars and dots trail upwards in three curving arcs, with a vertical line of stars running up the centre of the palm. The ink is black only, with clean, even lines and a light, open composition on pale skin.

Dear Mags, the glass on the lantern cracked again in the gale on Tuesday, so I have been up the iron stairs with a bucket of vinegar and a cloth since dawn, and my hands smell like a chip shop. You will laugh, but I have started counting the stars again, the way you taught me when we were girls on the sea wall at Sennen. Last night there were thirty-one of them spread over the bay like salt on a slate, and I could follow three lines of them out past the Carrack rocks as neat as stitching.

The eye is the thing I cannot explain. It was there on the chart drawer when I came in this spring, pinned under a tin of tacks, a little ink drawing that the old keeper, Ambrose Tull, must have made on the back of a tide table. Underneath he had written in pencil: watch the sunburst, it fills before the squall. I thought he was daft until the glass went grey on Friday and the spray came over the gallery in one long sheet, exactly as the rays on that drawing had shown.
So I am keeping the drawing in my apron pocket now, and I have set it right on the sill where the lamp can warm it. If you come down in August, bring your good scissors. I want to cut the stars out of that chart and send them to you, one at a time, so you can pin them somewhere that never sees weather. Yours in salt and paraffin, Nell.
