Eye in a crescent moon on the back of a hand

Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of the back of a hand showing a traditional style tattoo of an open eye with a shaded iris set inside a crescent moon. A dagger or blade-like shape pierces the top of the moon, and bold black spiked rays radiate outward with yellow fill between them. Black outlines and grey shading sit alongside yellow and green colour fills, and the design is centred on the hand against a plain, lightly lit floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the third stair, it gives under you, same as it gave under the last three lodgers. Now where was I. Ah yes, the Sallow sisters, who kept the Mariner's Rest on Gull Lane before the war, and the October the moon hung over Porthkerris like a sickle somebody had dropped in the sky. Every fisherman knew what a crescent that low meant. The sea was going to take one back before morning.

Ada Sallow kept a brass spyglass on the windowsill, and she was the only soul in the town awake that night. She watched the lamp of the Morwenna slide out past the breakwater, and then she saw the eye. It was open in the middle of the moon, yellow and wet, with the rays of a sun that wasn't up there spiking out round it like broken glass. The eye was looking straight down Gull Lane at her window. She said the iris went dark when it found her, the way a cat's does.

She took her late husband's bone-handled boarding knife from the drawer, went down the lane in her nightdress, and stood on the breakwater until the tide turned. The Morwenna came back on the flood at first light with all four men aboard, having lost her wheel and nothing else. Ada never said what she did with the knife, but it was never in the drawer again.

So when the shutters knock tonight, don't you go to the window to see what's looking. Bolt the door, lie on your back, and keep your hands where the moon can see them.
