Traditional style tattoo of a teal eye under grey clouds with orange lightning bolts and black raindrops, on the inner forearm.

Eye with clouds and rain on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A teal eye with a black pupil sits centrally, framed above by scalloped grey clouds with white highlights and below by orange lightning bolts on each side. Black raindrops with shaded edges and radiating lines fall beneath the eye. Bold black outlines and flat colour fills dominate, with the blue-grey, teal and orange ink set against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the fire is only good for the first hour. You want to hear about the Eye of Hallam Pass? Then mind the wind, because up there it listens. Every morning for forty winters a man named Tobiah Crewe climbed to the stone hut on the border line with a brass glass under one arm and a tin of boiled sweets in his coat. He did not watch the road. He watched the sky over both countries, because the sky does not carry passports.

One October the clouds came down from the north like grey sheep, and by noon lightning was stitched along the ridge, orange as a fox's tail. The customs men below wanted the gate shut. Tobiah stood in his doorway and looked up, and the old joke says the sky looked back. He wrote the hour in his ledger, then the word RAIN, and underlined it twice, because rain on that pass always fell upward into the mountain before it fell down.

The gate stayed open. A lorry of cattle, two priests and a girl with a violin got across before the hail. Tobiah's ledger says so in his neat hand: all through, all through. What it does not say is why he kept his eye on the storm when everyone else kept their eyes on the road. Maybe someone had to be the one who saw it coming, and someone had to be the one who got soaked for it.

So when you cross Hallam, look up. If the clouds are scalloped and the drops hang straight as nails, do not hurry. Wait for the eye to close.
