Eye in a jewelled triangle on the chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

A bold tattoo of a single open eye sits inside a red and orange triangle, with a faceted blue gem above it and a band of white dots along its base. Dotted chains hang below the triangle and end in a small drop shape. The thick black outlines and saturated colour, with shading that gives the gems and triangle dimension, are set against plain skin with paper towels at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lower panes of the Hollin Gate inn by the third day, and Wilf Garrow had been at the lead for two of them. The window above the stair was a triangle of red and amber glass with a single painted eye at its centre, and somebody's sledge had put a crack straight through the blue gem at its crown. Mrs Ainsley stood at his elbow with a tea towel over one shoulder, watching him cut a replacement from the box of offcuts he had carried up from Settle.

"It was my mother's," she said. "She had it put in the year the road first closed. Said a window ought to keep an eye on the weather for you." Wilf grunted and fitted the new jewel into the came, pressing the soft grey lead with his thumb until it hugged the edge. He had heard such talk before from people who wanted their glass to mean something. He preferred glass that kept rain out.

The dotted chains beneath the triangle were the hard part, a hundred little beads of solder that had to sit exactly or the whole thing looked like a rosary dropped in a ditch. He worked through the afternoon while the lamps were lit below, and the light through the panel went from red to a deeper rust, then to the colour of a coal left on the hearth.

When he finished, the last drop of glass hung at the bottom of the chain. Mrs Ainsley climbed the stair with a candle and stopped under it. Outside, the snow had thinned to nothing, and through the restored gem the first lights of the valley road showed, one by one, where the carters would come through in the morning. "There," she said. "Now it can see again." He packed his cutters and did not argue.
