A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came over the pass in the third week of November, and the innkeeper at Hollin Saddle hung the painted eye above her door the way her mother had. It was a triangle of tin in a gilt frame, and the eye in it had been watching travellers since before the road was cut. Nobody in the valley could say who had painted it. They only knew that a traveller who saw the eye before the eye saw him would come down the far side of the mountain by spring.

On the night the carter Aled Pryce came stamping through the door, his mule behind him and the wind behind that, the innkeeper, Nest Maddox, set a cup of mulled cider on the table and asked him what he had been carrying. He said salt and nothing else. She looked at his bags, then at the fine chain at his throat, from which hung a moth carved from pale horn. She asked where he had found the moth. He said a girl in the lower village had given it to him for a debt he could not remember. Nest told him the girl had been dead nine years.

Outside, the snow kept falling. Inside, the fire muttered and the carter's hand moved toward his collar. Nest told the old story plainly: the eye watches what is owed, the chain holds what was promised, and the moth is what the promise becomes when it is broken. She did not raise her voice. She only reached across the table and lifted the chain from his neck, and the links were warm as bread.

By morning the pass was white and quiet, and the carter had gone down the valley on foot with his mule and his salt. On the lintel the eye kept its watch over the empty road. On Nest's own cord, the horn moth she had worn since she was a girl turned slowly toward the valley, as though it had somewhere to be.
