French bulldog with all-seeing eye on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic French bulldog's head wears a studded collar and sits within an outlined triangle and dashed circle. Above the dog, an open eye sits inside a triangle with radiating rays drawn in fine lines. The dog is shaded in smooth greys with soft highlights, while the geometric elements use crisp black linework and dotted strokes. The tattoo is centred on the outer upper arm, with a plain street background.

On the island of Scarrow, where the tide came in twice a day and the gulls never learned to be quiet, there lived a bulldog called Brannock who belonged to nobody and followed everybody. He trotted behind the fishwife to the harbour and behind the priest to the chapel, and he sat on the step of the salt-store every evening, watching the boats come home with their lanterns lit. The old men said he had a bad habit of knowing things before they happened. A squall would turn over the far rocks, and Brannock would already be under the table with his squashed face pressed against the floorboards.

When the Haskell boy went out past the reef one October without telling anyone, it was Brannock who stood at the end of the quay and barked until the women came down with their shawls. Nobody could say how the dog had known the boy was gone. Nobody could say why he kept looking at the sky above the cliff, where a single bright patch of cloud hung open like a lid that had been lifted. Mrs Corran swore the sea itself had gone quiet to listen.
The boy came home at dawn, rowing with one oar and his hands wrapped in gull feathers, and he said a voice in the water had told him to stay where the cloud could see him. Brannock was sitting on the quay wall with his collar buckled tight, staring up at the cloud as though he were counting it. The fishwife gave him the first herring of the morning, and he did not eat it until the sun was fully up.
