Eye with skull in the pupil

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A realistic eye is tattooed with long lashes along the upper lid, and a yellow and orange skull appears within the dark pupil. The shading uses smooth grey and black tones around the lid and iris, with warm red and orange skin tones in the surrounding area. The image shows the same design twice, stacked vertically, with the lower panel showing a slightly different crop.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tilly Marsh kept her workshop above the forge in Wenlow, where the forest came down the lane until the trees almost touched the roof and acorns rolled across the slates at night. The glass eye on her bench had taken her father a month to finish. The iris was ochre and wood smoke, the lashes drawn one hair at a time, and at the heart of the pupil, painted so small only a lamp could find it, sat a skull the colour of old piano keys.

"Every pupil holds a little death," her father used to say, "or the customer won't believe it's looking at them." He had never explained why he added it to the stock eyes, and Tilly had stopped asking once she understood he would only answer with another sentence about glass. Old Mr Ashby came up the lane at dusk, leaning on a hazel stick, and asked whether the eye could see what he could not. Tilly told him glass saw nothing. It held the light the way a well holds the sky.

He took it anyway, wrapped in a handkerchief, and walked back into the trees with the lantern swinging. She followed at a distance and watched him set the eye on a stump where the path forked. For a while nothing happened. Then the lamp guttered, and in the dark the painted skull seemed to turn toward the path behind him, toward the village, toward her.

In the morning the stump was bare. Mr Ashby's stick lay across the fork, and beside it, pinned to the moss by a single wet acorn, was a black lash no longer than a pin, curved like a question. Tilly picked it up and found her hand was steady. Her father's words came back to her, and she understood at last that she had been counting the lashes when she should have been counting who was watching.
