Realistic eye tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A large realistic eye is tattooed on the forearm, showing the upper lashes, a curved eyelid line, and a detailed iris with a bright highlight in the pupil. The linework is soft and the shading moves smoothly from deep blacks in the lashes and pupil to light greys across the skin and lower lid. The design fills the centre of the frame against a dark background.

Ruth Blakemore let no one up the back stairs of her studio after eleven, except Mr Okafor's son, who came every second Thursday with a shoebox of broken clock faces and a tray of dead glass. The tray was lined with black velvet, and on it sat forty-odd glass eyes, each turned a little toward the window as though it had heard a car in the street. She had been grinding irises for thirty-one years above a chip shop in Digbeth, and she could tell at a glance which colours looked alive and which only looked painted.

The last eye on the tray was not for anyone. She had made it at Christmas, when the building was empty and the radiators knocked all night, and she had wrapped it in tissue and put it in the drawer with the spare screws. It was dark brown at the edges and went almost black at the centre, with one hard white flare where the streetlamp caught it. She had not meant to make it so exact. Her hands had simply kept going, lash by lash, as if somebody were waiting for it.
On Thursday, Mr Okafor's son asked whose it was. Ruth said it was a spare, which was true enough, and he nodded and carried the tray back down the stairs without looking at it twice.
That night she sat with the lamp off and the window open, and she watched the street below until a van pulled up and a man got out, looked up at the building, and then looked straight at the drawer where the eye lay wrapped in its tissue. She could not have seen it from there. She knew that. She sat very still anyway, and the glass, in the dark, went on catching the light.
