Face drawn inside a cube on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-needle style black outline shows a large circular face with a cube drawn over it, and smaller faces with eyes and mouths sit inside the cube. The linework is thin and even, in black ink only, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a pink satin sleeve and a teal chair.

The cube had been on the back of a menu card since the start of my shift, and Irene in bay C would not let me take it away. "Look longer," she said, tapping the paper with a biro that was nearly dry. "It turns over if you let it." I had five sets of obs to do before two o'clock and no time for parlour tricks, but I sat on the edge of her bed anyway and held the card at the height of my chin.

A big round face took up most of the page, with a box drawn across the front like a window someone had pulled shut. Inside the box were smaller faces, eyes half closed, mouths pressed tight. "That's the ward," Irene said. "Everybody's in the box. The big one's the only one looking out." I counted the small faces. There were six, which was the number of beds we had open, and I did not like that I had counted.

At ten past three the corridor lights dropped to their night setting and the card tipped in my hand the way she had promised. The box swung round. Now the small faces were on the outside, pressing at the lines, and the big round face was tucked inside with its eyes shut. I felt the cold of the room come up through the soles of my shoes.

When I looked up, Irene was asleep with her cheek on the pillow and the biro had rolled onto the blanket. I turned the card over. In the corner, in handwriting that wobbled, she had written my name and drawn a small box around the letters.
