Faceted gemstone and heart tattoos collage
Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo
A collage of nine photographs showing tattoos of faceted gemstones, hearts, a star and a pendant-style setting. The largest images show a rainbow-coloured heart on the upper body and a teal heart gem on a forearm, with smaller panels showing red, blue and green stones. The rendering uses smooth shading and facet highlights in full colour, with the subjects set against bare skin and a dark background.

The stonecutter's daughter was sent up the pass with a sack of river glass and orders not to come down until the snow had made up its mind. She did not mind the cold. She minded the goats, which followed her from ledge to ledge and ate the straps of her boots while she slept.

On the third evening she came to a cairn with a woman sitting on it, wrapped in a grey blanket the colour of old rope. The woman held out a hand. In the palm lay a heart of clear stone no bigger than a plum stone, and when the lamp caught it, it threw red onto the rocks, then blue, then a green like new bracken.
"Cut me one of those," the woman said, "and I will tell you the road down."
The girl had no tools but her father's wheel, so she sat on the cairn and worked the stone with the grit from her pocket, and every time she made a face on it she had to think of something she had left behind: her mother's kettle, the sound of the mill, the brother who had gone for the salt caravan and not come back. The facets came out sharp. Each one held a different colour, so that the heart glowed like a bruise healing in the sun.
When she was done the woman was gone, and in her place stood a short stone pillar with the heart set in its top. The goats came up the track and lay down around it without a sound. She walked down at first light. Behind her the stone caught the sunrise and threw it across the valley in every colour she had ever wanted to name, and the caravans that came after, when they looked up, knew the pass was open.
