Geometric origami-style animal on thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo of a faceted animal, built from straight lines and triangular planes in the manner of folded paper, covers the upper outer thigh. The lines are uniform and bold with no shading, and the design is shown in black ink only against light skin. A grey garment sits at the top edge of the frame, and a hand with a ring and dark nail polish is visible on the right against a teal background.

Dear Tomas,

It is gone two and the last bus has long since passed the launderette, so the only sound is the dryers turning over in the dark below my window. I found the box you left behind when you went south. Inside were forty-odd sheets of Dad's old Ordnance Survey maps, torn into squares, and under them the hare he folded the winter the shop closed. You remember how he creased each fold with his thumbnail until the paper squeaked. He never once used a ruler.

I tried to copy it tonight at the kitchen table, on the back of a council tax demand because it was the only blank thing in the drawer. My first attempt came out like a crumpled bird. The second had its ears pointing the wrong way, as if it was listening for a street that no longer exists. On the third I stopped trying to remember his hands and simply followed the creases, valley fold after valley fold, until the hare sat up on the table with its angled haunch and looked at me as though I had finally asked the right question.

I have pinned it above the cooker, where the steam will curl its edges. Come home at Easter if you can. Bring the map of the coast. We will unfold it together and see how far he got before the paper ran out.

Love, Nell
