Mirrored geometric star tattoos on two forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are shown with a symmetrical geometric design of interlocking polygons and an eight-pointed star at the centre, split so that the two halves mirror each other across the arms. The design is drawn in black linework with dense triangulated lines and minimal shading, and the ink reads as solid black against the skin. The composition is centred, with a hand holding one arm at the lower left and a person in dark clothing and shoes at the top right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the cattle grid at Sallow Wells an hour before the heat, and the man at the petrol station has already drawn the star for you on the back of a receipt. He says the road past the salt flat was laid out in 1931 by surveyors using an instrument with eight points, and that nobody living has driven its full length. Hold the two halves of the drawing up to the light, he tells you, and the road runs both ways.

You don't believe him, but you copy the drawing into your notebook anyway, pencil lines crossing triangle inside triangle until the paper goes soft under your thumb. Your sister is following in the other car, her headlights a smudge in your mirror every time the road bends. At the edge of the flat you stop, because the crust ahead is broken by a cairn of white stones, and its arrangement is the mirror of your sketch, point for point.

On the far side of the cairn someone has left a tin box with a folded map inside. You unfold it on the bonnet and lay your notebook against it, and the lines meet across the paper, the star closing like an eye. Your sister's car stops behind you. She doesn't get out. She just watches you pick up a stone and set it down where the two halves touch.

You sit on the tailgate until the sun drops and the wind starts writing over the salt. When you finally stand, the road you came in on is no longer behind you. It runs alongside, pale and patient, as though you have only ever been going round.
