Nested triangle star on a wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a geometric tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm. Interlocking triangles form a multi-pointed star, with the outer layers drawn as dotted lines and the inner layers as solid fine lines. The shading is absent, and the photo is taken from a low angle with the background softly out of focus.

The chart table in the Calliope smelled of lamp oil and wet rope, and Mr Oduya ruled every line on it himself before the morning watch. I was nineteen, and my job was to hold the dividers steady and call out the bearings so he could check them against his own counting. He never let me touch the ink.

The figure he was building that spring was a six-pointed star made of triangles set inside triangles, the way you might fold a letter inside another letter. The inner layers he drew solid, where we had sounded the bottom with the lead line and written the depths down. The outer layers he drew dotted. "Anyone can draw what they have measured," he said, not looking up. "The honest work is in marking what you have only guessed at."
Somewhere off the Azores the lead came up with sand on it that matched no depth we had recorded, and for eleven days the fog sat on us so thick the bowsprit vanished. The solid lines on our chart began to argue with the water. The captain wanted the whole thing redrawn. Oduya refused. He sat up through the middle watch with one lamp, pricking the dotted edges again and again with a needle, and added a single small triangle at the heart of the star where the inner figure met itself.
When the fog lifted at dawn, there was land exactly where his dots had put it, low and grey and nobody's to claim yet. I asked him how he had known. He tapped the tiny centre point with the back of the dividers. "Everything I am sure of fits inside that one. The rest is just keeping the lines apart until the sea agrees."
