Flowing angel tattoo in black linework

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo of a winged angel figure with a bowed head, drawn with flowing, looping lines that form the wings and a trailing, swirled lower body. The linework is smooth and uniform in black ink against pale skin, with no shading. The design sits centred on a plain background of skin with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad never lifted the pen. That was the first thing he taught me about lettering on the road out past Saltbrook, where the sign shop sat between a tyre fitter and a shuttered chapel. He could take a brush loaded with black sign enamel and run a single line from one corner of a board to the other and back again without the bristles leaving the paint, and the line would come out thin at the turns and fat on the straights, like something breathing.

The summer the heat cracked the tarmac, a woman drove in from the Tonopah turn with a photograph of a painted angel on her dashboard, creased and bleached by the sun. She wanted it on the chapel wall for her mother, who had died in June, and she wanted the head bowed, she said, because her mother never once in her life looked up at anything she was afraid of. Dad sat with the photo for an hour before he touched a brush.

He drew it in one stroke. The wings came first, looping out and folding back on themselves, then the long trailing skirt of the body curling down toward the dust. He didn't stop when the sun moved off the wall, and he didn't stop when I brought him water in a dented tin mug. When he finally lifted the brush, the angel's head was bent exactly as the woman had described, as if it were listening to something very low on the ground.

She paid in cash and didn't come inside. I still think about that line, how he trusted it to find its own way back.
