Faith script inside a fish outline on the lower back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the word faith written in a flowing black script inside an outlined fish shape, which is the ichthys symbol. The linework is smooth and of even weight, with solid black fill in the lettering and a clean, simple outline. The image is in black ink only, with a cropped view of the lower back and the top of denim jeans below it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fishmonger at Puteoli had sold me salt cod for ten years and never once drawn in the dust for me. That morning he did. While I counted coins into his palm he crouched, scratched a curve like a bent blade, then a second line crossing it, and rubbed the whole thing out with his sandal before the tax clerk could look over. "Who taught you that?" I asked. He jerked his chin at a stranger buying oysters two stalls down, a dyer from Antioch with indigo under his nails and a cough like a rusted hinge.

I followed the dyer to the seawall. He did not run from me, which I took as a good sign, and he did not say much. He asked whether my mother still kept a lamp lit in the upper room. When I said she did, he nodded as though I had answered a question from long ago. "The fish is not a secret," he said. "It is a door. Whoever knows the shape can knock." He pressed a folded scrap of papyrus into my hand, its edges soft with salt, and across the belly of the curve was one word in a hand that flowed like water over stones: pistis. Then he walked back toward the market and left me with the word and the sea.

That night I hid the papyrus in the hem of my tunic and waited for my mother's lamp to gutter. In the morning the fishmonger's stall was bare planks and the seawall had been scrubbed clean by rain. Only the dust at the foot of the steps still held a faint curve, and beside it someone, not me, had pressed a fresh fish into the earth with one fingertip.
