Infinity symbol with faith script on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black outline of an infinity symbol loops through the cursive word faith, which crosses the loop of the symbol. The linework is fine and even, with the lettering drawn as a continuous flowing stroke and a little soft shading in the strokes. The photograph is black and white and centred on the tattoo, with the skin of the upper back filling most of the frame.

Dear Tomasz, the lift is broken again, so I have walked all fourteen floors with the shopping and your father's letter folded in my coat pocket, and I am writing this at the kitchen table with my knees still shaking. Mrs Okafor on eleven says the council will come on Thursday, but she said that about the damp too, and the damp is still here, blooming up behind the wardrobe like a map of somewhere nobody wants to visit.

Your father's letter came from the boatyard in Gdańsk. He writes that the hull is nearly sound, that the men there have started calling the boat the Stubborn Girl, and that he has measured the stern twice because the first time he forgot the tape was in his other hand. I read it out to the pigeons on the balcony. They did not seem convinced, but then they never are.
What I keep coming back to is the drawing you pinned above the stove before you left. You said the loop was the sign for infinity and I said it looked like a pretzel someone had sat on. You laughed and said the word running through it was the only part that mattered, that the loop was just the shape a line has to take to get anywhere at all. I have been thinking about that all week, how one thin stroke can cross itself and still keep going.
So each morning I trace it on the steamed window: the loop first, then the word slicing through it, then my finger back to where it began. Come home when the Girl is in the water. Tell your father I have kept the tape measure in the drawer where he left it. Your loving sister, Hanna.
