Dandelion and Faith script on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A dandelion clock with seeds drifting away sits above the word Faith in flowing cursive script, joined by a single looping stem. The linework is fine and mostly solid black with soft grey shading on the seed head, and the design is shown in a close side view of the torso. The ink is black on warm-toned skin against a plain background.

The stationmaster at Hollin Cross kept a dandelion clock in a jam jar on the windowsill of the ticket office, and every morning he blew the seeds out over the platform so the wind could carry them to the sidings. Nobody asked him why. The porters said it was a habit from his mother, who had walked the line as a girl and believed a wish spent on a seed would find its way to whoever needed it.

One grey October a young woman came off the milk train with a single case and no ticket for anywhere further. She had been sent north to a cousin who had moved away, and the cousin had moved again. She sat on the bench under the clock for three hours while the rain came in sideways across the tracks, and the stationmaster, who was not a man for talking, brought her a cup of tea without a word.
When the last train had gone and the lamps were lit, she asked him what he was doing with the jar. He said the seeds would only keep so long, and a clock that wasn't blown was just a dead flower. She laughed for the first time that day. Then she stood, lifted the jar, and took a deep breath over it, and the seeds rose and scattered through the lamplight, drifting past the signal box toward the dark fields where the line ran out.
She caught the morning train. In spring, the stationmaster found a stubborn yellow head growing between the sleepers at the far end of the platform, and the next autumn it had gone to seed.
