Your brother Tom had the early shift. He stamped into the kitchen at half four, black to the eyes, and told you the manager had sent word that the cage would not run until the gale eased. Tom laughed about it, the way men laugh when they are frightened of being thought frightened. 'Lucky sod,' he said, ruffling your hair, and you let him.
Nobody in the village believed in luck that week. Two men went down the Hollin shaft anyway, because the foreman said the cage would hold, and the wind took the headgear and the men with it before noon. Tom was not one of them. He had swapped his shift for a dinner-time football match that never got played, and at seven that evening he came up the lane whistling for the first time all week.
That night you found Miss Pell's blue chalk in your coat pocket, and on the back of the wash-house door, where the slate used to hang, you wrote the line the way she had taught you, looping the T so it hung over the rest. There's a blessing in the storm. Your mother read it twice and said nothing, and then she put the kettle on, which was her way of saying the same thing.
