Faith script tattoo on a foot sole

Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo

A close photograph of the word Faith written in a flowing, looped script across the sole of a foot. The thin, delicate linework is rendered in pale, light-coloured ink that sits lighter than the surrounding skin, with the lettering softly raised against a plain, neutral background. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame and is sharply focused.

Mrs Okonkwo's flat on the eleventh floor smelled of Brasso and burnt toast, and every Thursday she handed me the same tin of pale ink and a sheet of tracing paper. "Loops first, Danny," she said. "Words come after the loops." I was nine and the lift was broken again, so I climbed the stairs with the tin rattling in my blazer pocket.

Her job was the lettering on the hoardings that went up round the estate whenever the council found some money. Faith, Hope, Keep Going, Ours. She painted them with a brush so fine it looked like a single hair, and the letters came out flowing as if the wall had been waiting for them. Nobody on the estate paid her. They left tins of soup on her mat instead.

The autumn the lift finally came back, the hoarding at the bottom of Harker Tower still said FAITH in her hand, though the rain had lifted most of the paint from the F. She sat on a milk crate with her sleeves rolled and said the F was the hardest because it had to lead the eye somewhere. I asked where it led. She tapped the sheet and laughed. "Round the bend and back again. That is all faith is, love. You go round and you come back to the start."

The next morning the council men came with a van and scraped the hoarding down to bare concrete. I walked to the bottom of the tower with the tin still in my pocket and drew the loop on the wall with one finger, slow, the way she had taught me, and I didn't lift my hand until it closed.
