Flower vine on the top of a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A foot resting on sand shows a tattoo of two simple five-petalled flowers with small centres joined by a thin curling vine that ends in a spiral. The linework is fine and even, with the petals and vine filled in with soft grey shading. The ink is black and grey, and the composition is close and centred on the foot with the toes at the top of the frame.

Nan, the clematis finally flowered on the back wall, the one Dad put in the spring the pit went quiet. Two blooms only, pale as skimmed milk, with yellow hearts you could mistake for pin heads if you didn't know to look. I've been out with the kettle every morning to check on them, which Mam says is daft, because they're only flowers and the wall is only brick.

The shaft closed in March. Eleven hundred men walked down the lane to the offices that week to collect their cards, and the lane was so quiet you could hear the pigeons on the cokeworks roof. Dad sat on the step with his tin of baccy unopened and told me he'd put a vine up the wall so there'd be something on the row that wasn't black. He trained it along the drainpipe with string and a bent coat hanger, and it kept going.
Last week the tip came loose from the string and curled right round on itself, a little spiral like the end of a fiddle. Mrs Armstrong next door said it was reaching for something. Dad said it was only showing off. I think it's looking for the sea, the way you always said the coast was only a bus ride past the pit tops, but I haven't told him that.
Send me a photo of your garden when you can, and tell me whether the sea at Seaton is still grey in the mornings. I've pressed one of the flowers inside this letter. Mind it when you open the envelope, it's older than it looks.
