Faith script tattoo on the lower abdomen

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a person's midriff and hip wearing a white crochet crop top and dark jeans, with one hand in a front pocket. The single word Faith is written in flowing black cursive script across the skin, with thin, even strokes and a few longer connecting lines. The tattoo is shown in black ink on a light background, with the composition centred on the lettering.

Sit down, sit down, the soup's still hot and I've not finished my story yet. You want to know how a word gets its legs? Ask old Mabs Penhallow, who painted signs for the harbour town of Gull Cross for fifty-one years. She could make a letter lean like a man into a gale, and she never once lifted her brush off the board if the line could be helped.

The winter the chapel roof came in, the vicar asked her for one word over the door. Not a sermon, he said, just the one thing folk needed when they walked in soaked to the skin. Mabs thought about it for three days, drinking tea with the lamp lit at noon. On the fourth morning she came down to the quay with a sheet of black card and a pot of enamel and wrote FAITH in one unbroken flourish, the F hooked like a fishing line, the long tail of the H running out across the wood as if it had somewhere better to be.

Here's the turn. The vicar hung it up, and the sea came over the wall that night. Everything in the chapel floated: hymn books, pews, a child's wellington boot. But the word stayed fast to its nail, because Mabs had carried that last stroke clean to the edge of the board, and the wood held the weight of it.

So raise your glasses to the bride and groom. Their first dance will be on those same dry boards, and I got my ladle back from the flood. Now, who's been at the cake?
