Faith script tattoo on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script word, faith, tattooed on the inner wrist. The letters have smooth, even linework and solid black ink with no shading. A green leather cuff with a metal plate sits across the lower part of the frame, and the plate has a stamped quote and a small flower motif, with the shallow focus leaving the tattoo slightly soft at the top.

The night porter at Pellow Cross swore the lamp above bed six burned on its own, and Nell Rowse, who had worked nights on the cottage ward for thirty-one winters, did not bother to argue. She carried her tea up the back stairs in a tin cup and sat down beside Amos Trewin, the old fisherman who had been rattling for breath since Tuesday like a loose hatch in a gale.

Amos had been a deep-water man before his chest gave out, and he did not care to be fussed over. "Don't count at me, Nurse," he said, though she had not said a word. "Counting's for people who think they're losing." She told him she was only keeping the time, the way the tide clock in the harbour office kept it. He grunted and asked her to fetch the photograph from his locker, the one with his wife standing on the quay in a yellow coat, and then he asked her to tell him once more that the boats were all in.
Near four the lamp flickered, and his breathing slowed to the gaps between waves. Nell did what her mother had taught her on the slipway: she breathed in with him, breathed out with him, and let the next breath wait a moment longer than it needed to. "Move on, then," Amos said, or she thought he said it, and the rattle became one long quiet sigh.
She sat with him until the window turned grey over the harbour wall. On the locker lay his cap, and folded inside it was a note in his thick capital hand: HAVE FAITH IN THE TIDE AND KEEP THE LIGHT ON FOR THE NIGHT BOATS. She did as he asked, and she never once turned that lamp off again.
