Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two inner wrists are shown side by side. The left tattoo is an outlined cross with teal and purple shading, and the right is the word faith in cursive script with a looping purple and teal swoosh beneath it. The thin black linework is clean, with soft colour fills and a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boat came round the Skerrow point on the third morning of the storm with only one oar shipped and nobody at the tiller. Brenna Gull, who kept the harbour cross on its iron stand, saw it first and ran down the slipway with her skirts bunched in her fists.

Her son Tam had gone out after the grey seal calf that the waves had carried onto the Hollow Rocks. The seal was found the next day sitting on the shingle, fat and content. Tam was not. Brenna went down to the cross every morning after that and tied a length of ribbon to its arm, one purple, one the green-blue of shallow water, and said the same words each time: the sea keeps what it is owed and gives back what it can spare.

The men of the island told her to stop. The minister told her to put her faith in the Lord and not in knots of wool. A girl from the mainland schoolhouse, over to count gulls for a survey, asked her plainly what she was waiting for. Brenna said she had no great hope left, only the habit of tying a thing and trusting it to hold.

Eleven winters later the ribbons were still there, faded to grey, when a wooden box washed into the cove. Inside was Tam's knife, and a bundle of salt-soaked letters in his hand, each one addressed to her and never sent. She untied the oldest ribbon, held it against her own wrist, and walked back up to the cross with a fresh length in her pocket.
