Faith script tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single word, faith, written in flowing cursive script across the inner wrist. The strokes are thin and even, with a fine hairline extending from each end of the word. The ink is dark grey-black against pale skin, and the blurred pink and purple flowers in the background sit behind it.

The chapel sign had hung by one screw since March, so at ten past two on the night shift I stood on an upturned mop bucket outside Ward 9 with a tin of gold enamel and a brush from my nan's sewing box. Sister Pell came out of the side room to check the clock above the lifts and stayed to watch.

"It wants to be joined up," she said. "Old lettering runs on. Nobody stops for a full stop." I drew the guideline in pencil first, the way my father taught me on shopfronts in Barnsley, a faint line edge to edge so the letters sat level. Then I pulled the hairlines long on either side, and the word rested in the middle of them like something hung on two strings.

By half five the f had a loop I was quietly proud of, and the last h leaned like a man walking into weather. Sister Pell read it twice with her lips moving and said it looked honest, which, from a woman who had signed off more deaths than I'd had hot dinners, struck me as high praise. I packed the tin and left the bucket by the lift.

On the bus home I remembered I had never rubbed out the pencil. At dawn anyone walking up from the car park would see two grey lines running out from the chapel door, a little longer than they needed to be, like someone had left a gap for a word still on its way.
