Faith lettering with cross on the wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of the word Faith sits on the inner wrist, with the letter t replaced by a upright cross. The lettering is crisp and solid in black ink, set against pale skin. A dark beaded bracelet and chain lie across the wrist, and the photo is warm-toned with a soft, shallow focus.

The boat is late again, and you stand on the slipway with your mother's grey rosary wound twice around your fist, thumbing the beads that have gone smooth from handling. The wind off the Sound has teeth this morning. Across the water the mainland is only a smudge, and the one sign of the Ardmore ferry is a white wake you have been watching for an hour.

Your mother kept the chapel key on the same bent nail for forty years. When she died the island handed you the key, the ferry rota and a sheet of cardboard on which she had painted one word, FAITH, in capitals that leaned like fence posts. The last letter had run dry before she reached it, so she had sketched a small cross where the T should go, and she told anyone who asked that the Lord had been kind about the paint.
The ferry comes round the point at half eleven. Sheila, the skipper, throws a line and shouts that the engine nearly quit off the skerries, then hands you a parcel addressed to the chapel in handwriting you know from a hundred birthday cards. Inside is a fresh tin of black enamel and a note: the cross is yours to keep or to paint over, whichever you can bear.
You carry the tin up the hill in the thin sunshine and stand before the noticeboard for a long time. Then you set the lid down, pull the beads from your wrist, and leave the cross exactly where it is, since it has been holding the word up for forty years.
