Faith script with cross on inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line black tattoo spells the word faith in cursive script, with a long crossing stroke that forms the letter f and runs along the inner forearm towards the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a deep black against the skin. The wearer's pale hand rests on a cream fluffy blanket, with the tattoo placed diagonally in the lower right of the frame.

The chapel committee wanted the fascia board done by Saturday, and I wanted an hour alone with it first. The letters had been lettered by a man called Dennis Vale in 1958, black on cream, and the paint had flaked to grey ghosts. Only the F had held. Its long stroke ran down past the baseline like a plumb line dropped from the roof, and someone in the parish had once said it looked like a fishing rod with ambition.

I mixed the enamel thin, the way Vale must have, and practised on an offcut of ply until my wrist ached. The trick, he'd written in pencil on the back of the board, was to let the stroke run out of the word rather than stop at it. Every other letter the chapel had ever paid for was built to stand still. This one was built to keep going, and the loops of the cursive had to lean into each other like people leaving a crowded hall.
On the last morning the rain held off long enough for me to finish the t and the h. I stood on the pavement with a flask going cold and watched a girl stop by the railings, read the word aloud under her breath, and walk on without looking back. Nobody asked who had painted it. That was the way Vale would have wanted it, I suspect, and it was the way I wanted it too.
