The banner had to be dry by Saturday, and I had three evenings at the trestle table in the back of the Ashcombe reading room, where the damp came up through the floorboards and the light from the forest edge went grey by five. Mrs Pryce had given me the word on a scrap of card: FAITH, in joined-up letters, the sort her mother used on wedding place cards. She wanted it looping right off the edge of the canvas.

I hadn't much faith to spare that autumn. My father had died in August, and I had stopped going to chapel the same month. The pink ribbon was the committee's idea, a nod to the fundraiser for the cottage hospital's new ward, and I argued against it until Mrs Pryce reminded me that the village had carried plenty of its own. So I drew the F first, then the long tail of the a, and let the black outlines run wider than I meant.

On the third night the pink pencil snapped in my hand and rolled under the table. When I crawled after it, the lamp caught the beeches through the window, the old trees at the edge of Hallow Wood standing in a row like people waiting to be called in. I stayed on the floor longer than I needed to, looking up at the underside of the table where someone had carved two initials and a date.

Sunday morning the banner went up over the green. Mrs Pryce stood in front of it with her arms folded and read it twice. Then she pointed at the F, where a small pink heart sat above the crossbar, a shape I had put there without thinking, and said, "That's new." I said it was a mistake. She only nodded, and I have never been sure whether she believed me.
