Have Faith script on skin

Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the words "Have Faith." written in black cursive script across skin, with a larger capital F and a full stop at the end. The linework is clean and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. A faint reddish mark runs beneath the lettering, and the tattoo fills the centre of a tightly cropped frame with the body part not identifiable.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The kettle has boiled twice since I started this letter, Tom, and the ink has thickened in the pot because I keep forgetting to put the cap back on. Mrs Pascoe at the chandlery says the Calliope was sighted off the Azores in March, which means she is somewhere past the Horn by now, or else at the bottom of the sea, and nobody on this coast will say which they think likelier.

I walked down to the quay on Tuesday with your father's spyglass and stood there until the gulls gave up on me and the tide turned the rowing boats round on their ropes. A boy from the fish market asked if I was waiting for someone. I said yes, and he told me they always come back eventually, which is the sort of thing boys say before they have learnt what eventually costs.

Your last letter is in the tin with the spare buttons. You always signed off the same way, the big F leaning over the rest of the word as if it were keeping watch, and the full stop pressed so hard the nib went through the paper. I have read it every night since, not for the news, which was only the weather and a splintered spar, but for that stop at the end. I think you did it on purpose, so I would have to finish the sentence myself.

So I am finishing it. I have pinned the letter above the range, where the damp cannot reach it, and I have written the rest on the back of the envelope in my worst handwriting so you will know it came from me. It says Have faith. I am going to post it to Valparaiso anyway, care of the harbour master, and then I am going to put the kettle on again.
