Fa;th lettering on the wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells the word Fa;th in a bold, serif typewriter-style typeface, with a semicolon in place of the letter i. It is worked in solid black ink with smooth, even lines. The lettering is centred across the wrist against a plain, lightly lit skin background.

The snow shut the Carrow road on Tuesday, and by Thursday the only machine in the Hollin Arms still earning its keep was my old Imperial typewriter. Mr Teague wanted the lamb special typed on a card for the bar. I typed it, then the bill for the two surveyors in room four, who had argued all evening over whether a hill could be said to have moved.

The i key went in the winter of 1961 and I never had it mended. Where a word wants an i, I strike the semicolon instead, and a reader stops there without quite knowing why. Ada, who does the rooms, says it looks like a typing error. Mr Teague says it is a typewriter with opinions.
On Thursday night the surveyors' car slid under the drift at the bottom gate, and a lad from the bakery came up the back lane with frostbitten fingers, asking whether we had a bed. He had a letter to post and no stamp. I gave him the room over the kitchen and wrote his name in the register, and he asked me what the card in the window said. Rooms; ask within, I told him. He said that sounded like a sentence that hadn't finished yet, and I did not argue.
Saturday morning the plough came grinding up from Carrow with its lamps still lit. The lad went down the hill with his letter, a stamp Mr Teague had found in the till, and a promise to come back in July. He left the card on the bar for me. I have it in the drawer now, with the stamp still stuck to its corner, and I think of it as a pause that somebody agreed to wait out.
