Faith, strength and trust script on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three words stacked in a flowing script: Faith, Strength and Trust, with the t letters drawn as crosses. The linework is solid black with clean, even strokes and no visible shading. The photo is taken close up on the upper back, with a floral top at the left edge and a blurred background.

Hollis Dunmore had three hours before the rain, and the chapel fascia on Kirkgate still needed its last word. He had gold leaf, a brush no wider than a thumbnail, and the lamp from the pub opposite turning the street the colour of weak tea.

He had lettered the first two words already. FAITH stood over the door in the tall upright hand his old master had drilled into him, and STRENGTH ran beneath it, the g dropping like a dowser's rod. The third word was the trouble. Mrs Aske, who ran the Sunday school, wanted a small cross standing in place of each t, and he had told her it would crowd the letters. She had replied that the church was not paying him for his comfort.

He did the crosses last. Each one took a short stroke down and a longer one across, his wrist light, the gold lifting clean off the size. Halfway through the final t his hand shook, and it was not the cold. Across the road a night bus pulled away from the stop, and a woman in a dressing gown stood under the lamp reading the words upside down, her lips moving over them as if she were learning them by heart.

When he climbed down the leaf had set. The wind came in ahead of the rain and the gold held, bright against the wet black paint. Mrs Aske would find nothing to fault. Hollis would never tell her that he had worked the last cross slowly, the way you might carry something across a room you didn't trust yet, and that the woman in the dressing gown had nodded at him before she went back inside.
