Script word faith on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and wrist with the word faith written in a flowing cursive script across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, and the ink has settled to a pale, soft tone on the skin. The word sits diagonally across the frame against a plain, slightly shadowed background.

Mam, you'll be cross that I'm writing on the back of the bill from the Llanberis café, but the pen they gave me has no ink left and this is all there is. The pass was shut again when we got to the top, so Dafydd and I sat in the Land Rover with the wipers going and ate the last of the Welsh cakes. He read me the whole of the map out loud, every contour, until I told him to stop before I threw it out the window.

I've been carrying Nain's letter in my coat since Bangor. You know the one, the one she wrote when you went to Cardiff, with the word she underlined three times. I took it out at the summit cairn and tried to read it against the wind, and the word kept slipping off the page like it was too wet to hold. So I did what she'd have done and I folded the paper tight into my palm and kept walking.
We came down at dusk into a village with one shop open. The woman behind the counter looked at my hands, all grit and chapped knuckles, then at the letter poking out of my pocket, and she said that the road always opens for people who stop complaining about it. I laughed so hard I had to sit on a crate of milk. I'm sending you the rest of the Welsh cakes, which I've hidden under my jumper. Don't tell Dafydd.
