Black fine line infinity symbol with the word family in cursive script, tattooed on a shoulder.

Infinity symbol with family script on shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo of an infinity symbol with the word family written in flowing cursive script running through its right loop. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The design sits centred on the skin of a shoulder, with a white paper towel visible beneath it against a blurred background.

Dear Maureen,

I found the old school photograph in the back of the kitchen drawer, the one where we are all squinting into the sun on the netball court at Hollins Road, and I made Dad sit down with me and go through every face. He said he didn't remember half of them. I told him that was the point of a reunion, you go back to find out who you used to be standing next to.

You'll laugh, but I've decided to go to the Hollins reunion on the twelfth. Mrs Tanner's old classroom is being knocked through for flats, so they're doing it in the church hall instead, with a raffle and those awful sausage rolls. I still have the stamp-sized ticket Gemma sent with the invitation. Bring the photograph, if you can find yours. I'd like to check whether you still have the gap in your teeth.

The lad at the parlour in Crewe asked me what the loop was for, the one I'd drawn in biro on the back of an envelope. I told him it was the shape of a figure eight lying down, the way you draw forever when you're nine and haven't got a clue what forever means. He wrote the word through the right-hand curve in the neatest hand I've ever seen, and I didn't say a word when he asked if I wanted the 'f' looped. I just said yes, the way we used to say yes to anything Gemma dared us to do.

See you in the church hall. Wear the green jumper so I can spot you from the door.

Love, Jan
