Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

An infinity symbol forms the main subject, with a decorative script letter R sitting in the left loop and the Roman numerals XX-III-MMXI running along the right loop. The linework is black with some variation in line weight, and the lettering has ornamental curls and flourishes. The tattoo is shown in close, centred framing on pale skin, with no colour ink.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the draught off the platform, for this one is about a loop of rail and a clock that would not stop. Up at Ridley Junction, where the line bends back on itself like a dog chasing its own tail, there was a signalman called Ada Rowe who kept a ledger of every train that passed under her window. She wrote in a fair round hand, and each entry began with a capital R for the engine's name, Reliance, the old tank engine that ran the milk.

Every night at twenty past eleven the Reliance came round the bend, went through the cutting and out the far side, and every night the same goods wagon stood at the far signal waiting for it. Ada never once saw who was riding in the wagon. She only saw the chalk mark on its door, two lines crossed like a figure lying on its side, and she wrote that down too, because a signalman who does not write things down ends up believing whatever the wind tells him.

The winter the cutting flooded, the Reliance did not come back, and the ledger stopped on a page headed XX-III-MMXI in her fair round hand. Ada kept the lamp lit anyway. Then one morning in spring a young man stepped off the milk train with a canvas bag and asked her, politely, whether the loop line still ran through to the old yard. She told him it did. He said he had come to meet someone who would be waiting there, and she found she believed him, so she took down her lamp and walked him out.
