Fantasy signpost and stacked books on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A wooden signpost carries three painted boards reading The Shire, Winterfell and Hogwarts, set above a stack of three books in pink, purple and green. Small sparkles and star shapes surround the design. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading on the books and wood and a pale pink wash behind the signpost.

The rain came in sideways off the car park at Millbrook market, and by eleven my awning was sagging like a wet sail. I had given up on selling anything bigger than a paperback. Then Nell Garside stopped at my trestle, shook out her hood and asked whether I had any maps of somewhere that wasn't on a map.

I told her I had a box of atlases from a house clearance in Crewe, most of them foxed and missing Europe. She didn't want those. She wanted the sign. It was leaning against the back wheel of my van where I'd dumped it that morning, three planks of weathered pine nailed to a post, each arm painted in faded letters I'd never bothered to read. The Shire, Winterfell, Hogwarts. Someone had painted them by hand, and someone had sanded them back, and the pink one had almost gone.

I asked her what she'd pay. She counted coins out of a purse with a broken clasp: forty-two pence, a button, a train ticket from Doncaster. I should have said no. Instead I told her the sign was going to the tip on Monday, and she could have it along with the three books stacked at its foot, pink, purple and green, their spines soft as bread.

She hauled it onto her shoulder and the rain bent around her as she passed the fishmonger and the phone repair stall, the arms pointing three ways at once. Ten minutes later the cloud split over the car park and every puddle lit up like a dropped coin. I packed up early. On the back of my van, where the sign had leaned all morning, there was a clean dry patch the exact shape of its post.
