Hogwarts crest on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A bold, outlined Hogwarts school crest sits on the back of a lower leg, with the word HOGWARTS in a curved banner above it. The shield is filled with red, yellow, green and blue, showing a lion, a snake and a badger-like animal around a central H. A ribbon below carries a Latin motto in black lettering, and the photo is taken straight on against a pink wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Hallam kept the coal sacks lashed under the tarpaulin of the Thistle Wren, and every morning that autumn one of them lay open on the towpath with its neck folded down as neat as a laundered napkin. Nothing else aboard was touched. The lion painted on the bow shield looked down at the mess with his mouth shut tight, which Mags said was the most a lion ever managed when he had something to hide.

Her grandson Tobias took the night watch with a lantern and a stick. The first night he heard something dry slide along the bilge boards, and he swore it was a snake, though he was too frightened to look. The second night a badger came up the bank, grumbling to itself like an old sexton, and dug under the tarpaulin with great care. Tobias sat on the hatch and watched it go, because a boy cannot stop a badger by shouting at it.

He followed the sacks up the lane in the grey light. They ended at the lock cottage, where a widow had let her stove go out in the cold, and the coal was already piled by her door in a neat black heap. Tobias came back and told Mags, and she only nodded, as if she had known it all along. The snake, it turned out, had been coiled round the sluice gate the whole time, keeping the lock from flooding the widow's yard, and the lion had been asleep. The coal kept going up the lane every winter after, and Mags let it. The Latin on the ribbon still says never to tickle a sleeping dragon, which Tobias always thought was no use to a badger at all.
