Deathly Hallows symbol on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black brushstroke Deathly Hallows symbol sits centrally on pale skin. A triangle, a circle and a vertical line cross a horizontal bar, with tapered, uneven strokes and soft grey edges that suggest a brush or ink-wash finish. The plain background and even lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

The frost has kept the lane shut since Tuesday, so I'm walking this down to the bus shelter myself, and you can read it there or in whatever bar you're hiding in. I know you won't answer the phone, so this is the next best thing.

The solicitor read out Nell's will with the radiator knocking, and the only things she left were the tin under the dresser and a note in her square capitals. Inside the tin: a brass set square worn to a lamp-glow at the corners, a ring cut from the old gatepost's iron band and rusted thin as a biscuit, and the ash rod she used to walk the ewes through the bottom gap. The note said one of us keeps the angle, one keeps the round, and the line goes to whoever can still stand in the wind. Mum called it senile. I put the set square on the mantel and didn't argue, because it was the first thing in years we'd both looked at without shouting.
Yesterday I took the rod up to the top field where the hedge runs dead straight. Under the drift by the gate I found a rusted hinge pin, and when I fitted the ring over it the set square slid onto the cross of the two as if it had been waiting. Three shapes, one line running through the middle, all of it standing in snow so white it hurt.
Meet me at the gate on Sunday at first light. Bring the set square. I'll bring the rod and the ring, and we'll see whether the thing comes together the way she meant it to. Ruth
