Deathly Hallows symbol and script quote on chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line, sits to the left of a two-line script quote reading 'After all this time? Always.' The linework is fine and slightly uneven, with light shading in the letters and triangle. The close, slightly angled phone photo shows the upper chest near the collarbone, with the edge of a black lace garment at the bottom of the frame.

Sit where the pan steam can't reach you, lad, and mind the bread proving under that cloth. You want the tale of the three things in the bottom locker, and you'll not get it while you're gawping at the stove. Old Silas Penhale kept that locker before me. When the Marigold went down off the Dogger in '61, he was the only one who came up through the hatch, and he came up clutching nothing but a sodden sea-boot.

Three things, he always said, had been handed to him on the quay at Newlyn by a woman selling eels, a woman nobody else ever saw again. A triangle of driftwood, scorched and smooth as a bone. A ring cut from a ship's hawser, so tight it would hold a wave's worth of tide. And a marlinspike, straight as a grudge. She told him that whoever held all three could walk out of any gale and find the one they'd lost. He laughed at her, and he kept them anyway, in that locker, for forty years.
When his Nan died, he found a scrap of paper tucked inside the lid in her cramped hand. It said only: After all this time? Silas read it at this very table, then took the galley chalk and wrote one word underneath, and he never told a soul what the question had been, only that the answer was the one thing he ever needed to say.
That's the locker, and that's the end of it. Now, the potatoes won't peel themselves, and I've a mind to see you start on them before the tide turns.
