Deathly Hallows symbol on the ankle
Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a triangle with a circle and a vertical line through its centre sits on the side of an ankle. The linework is loose and slightly scratchy, with a few dots and stray strokes around the triangle. The ink is black only, and the photo is taken from a close angle against a dark, glossy background.

You have walked the lane past the last cottage at Hollin's End because your mother said the blackthorn at the forest edge is in flower and she wants a sprig for the kitchen window. The trees close over you within twenty paces. Rooks lift from the oaks, complain, and settle again. Somewhere ahead water talks over stones, and you follow the sound because it is the only thing in the wood that seems to know its own way.

At the brook a ferryman stands with no boat, only a pole leaning against an alder. He is cutting a notch into a stick with a penknife. "Three things were left to this parish," he says without looking up, "by a miller who cheated the river." He shows you the first: a flat grey stone with a hole through it the size of a wren's egg. Hold it to your eye, he says, and you will see the dead you have lost standing where the light falls. You do not want to look. You put it in your coat pocket anyway.
The second is a length of grey cloth, folded small as a handkerchief, which turns to shadow when he shakes it out and makes the brook fall silent. The third he does not offer. He presses a penknife into your palm instead and tells you to cut the blackthorn yourself, then carve one short line through the middle of the stick, the way the miller did, so whatever comes after you knows where to stop.
At the gate your mother is waiting with her arms folded against the wind. She asks what you brought back. You open your hand: a spray of blackthorn, a penknife, and nothing else. Only later, when the lamp is out, do you find the grey stone in your pocket, and through its hole you see the lane you walked, empty, waiting for you to go back for the cloth.
