The tattoo shows a Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle with a vertical line, set over a soft grey shaded cloud. Below it, a block of capital lettering in several serif weights reads a quote across four lines. The image is in black ink and greys, with clean outlines and soft shading, photographed close up on the side of the torso.

Mind the step, love, the flour sacks are damp this time of year. No, leave the lamp where it is. We bake by the oven's glow until the shutters go up, and the old ones always said you could hear the first bell from the bottom of the proving drawer if you kept still enough.

Right. My grandmother's bakery stood on Cutler Lane, where the mist came off the canal every morning like breath off a horse. Her husband, Tobias Wren, kneaded dough for forty years and never once looked at a clock. He had a triangle scratched into the lid of his flour bin, with a circle through it and a line down the middle, and when I asked what it meant he said, that's for the three things a clever man keeps, and he wouldn't say more.

The winter he got sick, he sat on an upturned crate by the oven and told the boy who swept the floors that he wasn't frightened. "A well ordered mind," he said, tapping his temple with a floury finger, "knows the road goes on past the last loaf." The boy, who was twelve and thought himself very grown, asked whether that was a comfort. Tobias laughed till he coughed. "It's an adventure, lad. Nobody ever gets to see the next chapter from this side."

He went out on a Tuesday, before the bread was cool. We still have his flour bin. The triangle is worn almost smooth now, but if you hold it to the window at first light, the circle catches the grey and it looks like a door left open.
