Fearless script lettering tattoo

Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a tattoo in cursive script that reads Fearless, followed by a semicolon. The linework is dark and fairly fine, with smooth, flowing strokes and some soft shading in the letter forms. The image is black and white, and the lettering sits centred against a plain, softly lit background of skin.

Dear Sabinus,

The new lintel is up over the bathhouse door at Eboracum, and I have not stopped looking at it since the masons hauled it into place. You will remember the word Father used to tap on his wax tablets when he wanted us to slow down: fearless. I cut it in the capitals the magistrate asked for, but I could not bring myself to square off the tail of the final letter. It swung out and stopped, a finger's width short of the edge, and the mason laughed and asked whether I had made a mistake.

I told him the mark was a semicolon, the sort the clerks in Londinium use when a sentence is not finished but only pausing for the next clause. He thought I was mad. Perhaps I am. But you know how Father never let a letter end without leaving room for a reply.

The magistrate came yesterday with his clerk and stood for a long while under the stone, his hands behind his back. He asked what came after the mark. I said I did not know, that the choosing belonged to him, and that a stonecutter's duty is to leave the gap honest and not fill it with his own opinions.

I have set the chisel down and have not picked it up since. Write to me when the spring boats come in and tell me what word you would put after it. Your brother, Aulus.
