Fearless script tattoo with heart on wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink script tattoo spells the word fearless across the wrist, with a small outlined heart beneath the final letters. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering is slightly looped and flowing. The photograph is black and white and taken close up, with the wrist filling most of the frame.

Dear Ivy,

The rain has been at Saltergate since Tuesday and the market is nothing but puddles and sagging tarpaulin. I am writing this under the awning of Mr Okonedo's fish stall, where he has lent me the only dry stool on condition I don't drip on his trays. You will laugh, but I have spent the morning lettering a board for the new stall at the far end, the one selling secondhand knitting needles in old biscuit tins. The woman who runs it, a Mrs Pryce with a voice like a foghorn, wanted a word across the top. Fearless, she said, and she wanted it looped, like a length of wool that never snaps.
I did it in black enamel on a plank of old oak, one unbroken line that ran from the F down into the last letters. Then she asked for a small heart tucked beneath the final s. Not red, she said, nothing that shouts. I told her the rain would have the paint off it by spring. She said, good, then it will have to be a heart that wants to stay.
So I drew the heart last, with the finest brush I own, and gave it an outline and nothing inside, so that when the damp got in it would still read as a heart and not a smudge. Mrs Pryce paid me in two skeins of grey wool and a bag of clothes pegs, which is the sort of wage I can live with.
Whether the word lasts is not my concern. What I keep turning over is how little ink it takes to say a thing you mean, and how easily the weather takes everything else. Come and see it before the rain turns to snow. Bring a brolly and the good cocoa.
Love, Nell
