Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black infinity symbol with the word Sorella written in flowing script through its loop. The linework is smooth and even, with the lettering's strokes thickening slightly where they cross the infinity curve. The tattoo sits against plain skin, with a white towel visible along the bottom edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rope has already been knotted twice by the time you reach the mole at Ostia, and Livia is shouting from the stern that the loop will not hold if you keep fussing with it. You keep fussing anyway. Her hands taught yours this trick when you were six, too small to see over the gunwale of your father's boat, the cordage run through your fingers until you found the figure that never comes to an end: a loop passing through itself and back again.

The wind backs to the south and the sail fills. You stand on the wet stones with the spare coil over your shoulder and watch the boat shrink toward the lighthouse. Livia lifts one arm and calls the word she has always used for you, sorella, and the gulls take the rest of it out over the water.

The winter is long. Every morning you walk down to the bollard and tie the loop again, pulling it tight until the rope creaks, then loosening it and tying it once more because your hands need something to do. The older men at the fish market tell you the knot is for luck. The priest tells you it is vanity. You say nothing, because you know what it is for, and because a knot is only honest when someone is on the other end of it.

In March a black squall comes down the coast, and you stand on the mole until your coat is soaked through. Then a lantern swings round the headland, and a hull grinds against the fenders below you. Livia throws a line up before she even looks at you. You catch it, feel the old loop still sitting tight on the post, and find that it has held.
